Robert A. Traina

Robert A. Traina was born in Chicago, Illinois.  He was a graduate of Spring Arbor Junior College (now Spring Arbor University) (A.A.), Seattle Pacific College (now Seattle Pacific University) (B.A.), The Biblical Seminary in New York (S.T.B., S.T.M.), and Drew University (Ph.D.).  He was also awarded the Doctor of Divinity degree from Asbury Theological Seminary. Dr. Traina taught at The Biblical Seminary in New York; and from 1966 until his retirement in 1988 he served on the faculty of Asbury Theological Seminary, during which time he was also Academic Dean and Vice President for Academic Administration.  He was the author of Methodical Bible Study: A New Approach to Hermeneutics, which is one of the principal resources for inductive Bible study, and co-author of Inductive Bible Study: A Descriptive Guide to the Study of the Bible, published in April 2011 by Baker Academic Press; and he contributed to Christianity Today, Baker Dictionary of Christian Ethics,and God’s Word for Today.  Dr. Traina was an ordained elder in the United Methodist Church. Dr. Traina died at his home in Wilmore, Kentucky, on November 9, 2010, surrounded by his family.

David R. Bauer

David R. Bauer is a native of Mansfield, Ohio.  He is a graduate of Spring Arbor College (now Spring Arbor University) (B.A.), Asbury Theological Seminary (M.Div.), and Union Theological Seminary in Virginia (Ph.D.).  He has done postdoctoral study as a Visiting Scholar at Princeton Theological Seminary.  He has taught at Ashland Theological Seminary and the School of Theology of Virginia Union University.  Since 1984 he has served on the faculty of Asbury Theological Seminary and is currently the Ralph Waldo Beeson Professor of Inductive Biblical Studies and Dean of the School of Biblical Interpretation.  He is the author of four books: Gospel of the King: Studies in the Gospel of Matthew, An Annotated Guide to Biblical Resources for Ministry, The Structure of Matthew’s Gospel: A Study in Literary Design, and co-author of Inductive Bible Study: A Comprehensive Guide to the Practice of Hermeneutics, released in April 2011 by Baker Academic Press.  He has edited, with Mark Allan Powell, two books: Treasures New and Old: Recent Studies in the Gospel of Matthew; and Who Do You Say That I Am? Essays in Christology. Dr. Bauer has also contributed articles to the Dictionary of Jesus and the Gospels, and The New Interpreter’s Dictionary of the Bible; and he is the principal translator of the Matthew portion of the Common English Bible. His articles have appeared in such journals as Interpretation and The Catholic Biblical Quarterly.  Dr. Bauer has chaired the Matthew Group and the Hebrews Consultation of the Society of Biblical Literature.  He is an ordained elder in the Free Methodist Church.  He lives with his son, Christopher, in Wimore, Kentucky.
